It is the sole survivor of the great eighteenth century northern cloth halls, a class of buildings which embodied the vital and dominant importance of the trade in hand woven textiles to the pre-industrial economy of the West Riding of Yorkshire, from the Middle Ages through to the early nineteenth century. It is impossible to overstate the scale and importance of this trade, not just to the history of Halifax and the West Riding, but to the nation as a whole over some years between the twelfth and eighteenth centuries.

When it was built, The Piece Hall was a highly visible statement of the great wealth, pride and ambition of the cloth manufacturers. Although built for trade, it also embodied the most cultured sensitivities of the Enlightenment; these bluff northern manufacturers deliberately chose a design for their building which adapted the neo-classical orders of architecture derived originally from the Romans.

Q I’m from the other side of the country, but I’m sitting in my lover’s San Francisco apartment wondering what I’m doing. I flew out here to spend five glorious days with her. We connect sexually she’s a Dom stone-butch top, I’m a queer femme sub , we connect intellectually and we make each other laugh. But she’s literally twice my age. In no way does this bother me. She’s handsome and wonderful, and I’m so proud to be with her. But she frets that she’s too old for me and will die before me and it isn’t fair to have the feelings we do.

I can hang on to this ledge, Dan, and not let myself utterly fall for this woman so that she doesn’t break my heart when she says we must part as friends.

After being propelled from a high street branch to billboards and television screens, Howard has left the bank that made him a household name. To the few people who haven’t seen his all-singing and dancing ads for Halifax, which frequently featured in “most annoying” polls, he is known as Howard Brown. His star has has been on the wane for some time. Removed from televised ads in , he has since been working as a sales ambassador.

But the bank is, as of now, “in the process of developing the brand”, and a new advertising agency has been hired, for whom the future is not Brown. His telephone was switched off all day yesterday, and it is not immediately clear what this range of opportunities might be. Halifax adverts aside, his media CV to date includes a Barry White cover reaching Number 13 in the charts, and a cameo in the Christmas special of The Office, appearing alongside David Brent in a nightclub promotion Blind Date game.

The previous decade has produced all manner of individuals who have tasted 15 minutes of fame before being left thirsty for more. Big Brother was airing for the first time, and Simon Cowell was just another record executive. I know you want more. The ads regularly feature prominently in polls of the most annoying adverts of all time, but were nonetheless remarkably successful, to the extent that Mr Brown became the subject of a waxwork in Madame Tussauds, an honour yet to be bestowed on the former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

But, as the face of one Mr Brown Gordon became synonymous with the financial crisis, his chirpier namesake was considered an ill-fitting image for a time in which all round the world banks were offering anything but the “extra” he had once promised. Photos of Rehtaeh Parsons appeared Tuesday in Facebook ads for a dating site. Toronto man Andrew Ennals was surfing the social media site Tuesday afternoon when he first saw the ad featuring Parsons. The year-old teen died earlier this year after attempting suicide amid bullying that stemmed from a photo taken of her during an alleged sexual assault. Two Halifax teens face child pornography charges in the case.

Supreme bad taste: a dating site’s Facebook ad is using a picture of Rehteah Parsons. Facebook served me this ad today, quite possibly the most offensive ad I’ve ever seen. Ennals told HuffPost Canada he was so baffled by the ads that he did a Google image search to double-check that the image was really of Parsons. Parsons’ father, Glen Canning, wrote on his blog that he was “completely bewildered and disgusted” by the ads.

Facebook told HuffPost Tuesday that the ads were in violation of its policies and have been removed and the company responsible has had its account blocked.

The Prince and Hollis Buildings include four buildings, all dating from the Confederation period. They were all built within a few years of each other and create a strikingly unified streetscape for one block of Prince Street in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. They are all located adjacent to one another, with three buildings on Prince Street and the fourth on the corner of Prince and Hollis streets. The four buildings and property are all included in the provincial designation.

These four buildings are valued because they form a little-altered, integral streetscape, dating from the Confederation period. They are also valued because they have a close historical association with both the Novascotian and Morning Chronicle newspapers, and with Sarah Howard, known as Victorian Halifax’s foremost business woman. This building was named after John M. Geldert, who bought this property in and established a grocery business here. In January of , fire destroyed Geldert’s original business and this current building was constructed as a replacement in The building was designed by the architect Henry F.

Busch and is one of the earliest examples of his work in Nova Scotia. The building was constructed by a well-known Halifax builder, George Blaiklock. The Nova Scotia building next door at Prince Street was also designed by Henry Busch and constructed in by Robert Malcolm, replacing the earlier building destroyed by the fire.
