By they were in business together and attempting to develop an electrically-powered hedge clipper; however, when this idea was abandoned they began work on a vertical-milling attachment designed to fasten to almost any of the hundreds of thousands of plain horizontal millers then in use. This accessory, the first of many Bridgeport heads and their accessories , become known as the ” Master Milling Attachment “, and was originally designated by the partners as their “Model C”. Smartly presented, with a polished aluminium housing, it was well engineered and equipped with a heat-treated and ground spindle running in four precision, pre-loaded bearings with those at the pulley end allowed to “float” to accommodate expansion and contraction of the spindle and with a quill that accepted as standard 3-inch long B-3 collets. The first production example was delivered in to the Atlas Tool Company of Bridgeport and the head continued in production long enough to become known as the “Model M” when eventually fitted, some years later, to the first Bridgeport milling machine.

Metal Milling is the work of machining flat, curved, or irregular surfaces by feeding the workpiece against a rotating cutter containing a mutiple cutting edges. The milling machine consists basically of a motor driven spindle, which mounts and revolves the milling cutter, and a reciprocating adjustable worktable, which mounts and feeds the workpiece.
Milling machines are basically classified as vertical or horizontal. These machines are also classified as knee-type and bed type. Knee-type milling machines have a vertically adjustable worktable resting on a saddle which is supported by a knee shaped massive casting that rides vertically on the milling machine column and can be clamped rigidly to the column in a position where the milling head and milling machine spindle are properly adjusted vertically for operation.
Bed type mills have a fixed table that holds more weight. Vertical milling machines have a spindle located vertically, parallel to the column face, and mounted in a sliding head that can be fed up and down by hand or power. Modern vertical milling machines are designed so the entire head can also swivel to permit working on angular surfaces. My son has a Bridgeport CNC series 1 mill dating from which is fitted with an Accurite cnc controller and servo motors. It looks like the servo motors have an encoder fitted, there are also glass scales which feed into each servo assembly. As it looks like the servos are self contained is it possito use a breakout board or something like that and use the machine with Mach 3?
