PRESS RELEASE – May 8 – South East Asia’s largest dating company, Lunch Actually Group, has acquired Indonesia’s biggest dating service, Setipe.

After founding Lunch Actually in Singapore back in with her then-fiance now husband , Violet has expanded the business across Asia to cities including Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Jakarta and Bangkok. She is one impressive boss lady! Jamie and I got married in , and we had our children Corum and Cara in and , respectively.

When Corum was born, I was fortunate to have a strong support system at both work and at home, with an extended family always willing to lend a hand, a team at work that understood my mummy duties, and of course a supportive husband who was willing to share childcare duties such as changing diapers and so on. One of the advantages of being an entrepreneur is definitely having my own working time, and I could spend time working from home while still being with my kids.

As an entrepreneur, it is hard to take four months of maternity leave. For both my kids, I more or less went back to work almost immediately. My husband Jamie is super hands-on and would always help with the kids when I had to attend important meetings, and when I had to go back to work, my parents, my in-laws and my helper were always there to help with the kids as well. This is an excellent question, and for me, as much as I love my kids and I love spending time with them, I think it is important that I do have a separate identity.

I believe that by continuing to pursue my work as well as my passions, I am also setting a positive example for my kids, especially my daughter, that it is possible to have it all — a career and at the same time a fulfilling marriage and happy family. For me, I have my calendar that I use to put down all my plans and schedules, including personal and family plans. If anything, it inspires me even more to help singles to find their partners, so that they can experience the happiness that I feel.

Work-wise, one of the things I have learned as an entrepreneur is to learn to let go , to delegate tasks to my team leaders, and to let them learn and grow.

A year-old accountant, who wants to be known only as Hannah, has always preferred to meet up with her dates in person and joined local dating agency Lunch Actually in January. The first man became uncomfortable with meeting a stranger amid the rising number of confirmed cases, while her second date was postponed as he had to be quarantined for being in close contact with a Covid patient. Finding a partner is based on destiny.

Following recommendations from friends who had found their partners online, Ms Peh decided to give dating apps a shot several months after her break-up. Over two weeks, she went on five separate dates with men whom she got to know via the Paktor dating app. Among them was Mr Andrew Chia, a bank analyst and part-time swim coach who was about a decade older than her. Less than two years later, the pair got married in and they just had their first child earlier this month.

Ms Peh’s experience reflects just how much the dating scene has been changed by apps designed for those who are looking for love or companionship. Today, a growing number of young Singaporeans are finding Mr or Ms Right via dating apps — sometimes in a matter of a few clicks and swipes.

With the prospect of going out on dates scuppered due to circuit breaker measures, Mr Kishen Ravindaran turned to video conferencing and had his first virtual date last month. Conducted on a high-quality video-conferencing platform and with the dating agency he uses – Kopi Date – helping to smooth out conversation kinks with a “starter kit”, he ended up chatting with his date for four hours. Since the Covid outbreak, many dating agencies have had to arrange virtual dates in place of outings to cafes or restaurants.

Singles are warming up to the idea as well. Popular United States-based mobile dating app Bumble, for instance, saw a 56 per cent increase in video calls from March to last month among its users from around the world. Home-grown Kopi Date and Lunch Actually are among dating agencies that have turned to virtual dating. Kopi Date, founded in July last year, is tapping video-conferencing platform Whereby, which allows custom branding within the chatroom so that the dating agency’s video dates are held in a Kopi Date-themed chat window.

Kopi Date co-founder Lee Jing Lin says: “We spent quite some time trying out multiple video-call programmes in search of a platform that could come as close to our signature Kopi Date experience as possible, before finally deciding on one because of its user-friendly yet beautifully minimalist interface. She says that since moving to video conferencing for its dating sessions, Kopi Date – which has more than a thousand users – has seen a 30 per cent increase in the number of users who want to go on more virtual dates.

She adds that there has been no decline in sign-ups due to the Covid outbreak as the agency has been accepting sign-ups for offline dates in advance. As for Kopi Date’s starter kit, it is a physical pack sent to participants after they have been matched with their dates. The kit includes interesting facts about the other person; ice-breaker suggestions; technical tips about having a working microphone, camera, lighting and Wi-Fi; and a drip coffee or tea pack.

Kopi Date had plans for a mass Valentine’s Day date for its clients in February, but shelved them for a virtual event due to government advisories against mass gatherings.

Lunch Actually, a dating company that provides relationship consultations for busy professionals and sets them up on profile-based lunch dates, recently released its Annual Singles Dating Survey with over 1, participants from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Thailand. The company, founded in Singapore with branches in the aforementioned countries, announced its findings on Wednesday.

Violet explained that the trend of slow dating has emerged among singles recently, where they no longer prefer having unlimited options when it comes to their potential matches. One wonders what that figure will be like this year in the wake of the global Covid health crisis. Tinder, for instance, announced in March that it would be making its Passport feature free for all members, allowing them to swipe to connect with users around the world in an effort to curb feelings of isolation. While the digital players of the matchmaking scene have their work cut out for them in , it is the offline matchmaking services that have had to quickly adapt and diversify their business models to stay afloat while under partial lockdown.

In response to the MCO, Dateworks Virtual Dates was launched, letting singles connect with each other digitally through personalised matching by a certified Dateworks matchmaker. Dateworks clients are matched with one another based on personal preferences and personality traits. Having a virtual date moderated by a Dateworks expert also adds a layer of security and safety to the overall experience. Violet Lim , CEO and co-founder of matchmaking platform Lunch Actually , agrees that they do, but adds a word of caution for a more successful online date.

However, it’s still a ‘date’ and it’s important to have a good first impression. We remind all the participants to dress up and choose a spot at home with a nice background or a nice virtual background! Amidst economic uncertainty, social distancing and the ongoing struggle to curb the spread of Covid, many singles are likely to put their dating life on hold for the time being.

Others, according to Lim, view things differently. And in dating, meeting more people through virtual dates,” Lim says. In the post-MCO period, Ng advises singles to define their priorities clearly, adding that those looking for a more serious, long-term relationship should be prepared to put in the necessary time and effort rather than expecting instant results. One thing I hope this pandemic teaches us is to identify what’s really important and how to re-assess our values.
