Teachers are revamping their teaching styles and lessons to reach students in a way that is fun and memorable. As a secondary social studies teacher, I had to become extra creative in order to find ways to make learning historical content and skills fun and exciting. I knew lectures and workbooks would keep the learner in a sedated state. So how could I bring learning to life and get students to learn without even realizing it? In this blog, I will share out my speed dating activity and how I used in my 11th grade social studies classroom. Speed Dating The great thing about this activity is that it allows your students to explore a large amount of content in a 45 or minute class period and can be used in any subject area. Students work individually, in pairs, and then collaboratively.

I like doing this lesson for a number of reasons. The students are required to practice their interviewing skills on their peers as they bring a business card, a name tent and a resume with them of their historical figure on the high school level. Teaching research methodology to our new PhD fellows is my favourite class. Doing so in small groups, as is often the case in our PhD programmes and professional training, allows me to engage in creative and innovative educational formats. Every time I teach, I try a new set-up or tweak things a little. But of course, some formats have proven their value over time, so they become permanent fixtures every year.
In an interactive classroom setting, we invite our PhDs to pitch their research idea to a few staff members in minute 1-on-1 meetings. For staff members, the game is different.
I utilize Speed Dating in the classroom every day at least twice per class period. It is a very versatile teaching method. I first organize my classroom into two rows.
This activity can be used as an anticipatory set, activity in the middle of a session, or reviewing at the end of a class. Students are sharing and questioning other students to increase their understanding of learning outcomes or processes. Supplies: 1. Prompts which could be questions, graphics, short articles, or worksheets. Preparation: Prepare whatever prompts that you want to use. Copies will be needed either each participant or for each set of partners.
In Class: 1. If you have prompts for each student, hand them out so that they have time to either complete the worksheets or collect their thoughts on the prompt.

We love to create new and fun ways to practice Spanish while learning more about the local culture.
